Should you buy a Granite or Quartz based countertop?

At some point in your search for the right countertop for your kitchen you will most likely be presented with making a choice between granite or quartz. Both are high quality leading types of countertops in today’s market and offer a wide variety of choices. The question then becomes, which do you chose? In order to make that decision you must understand what each of them are and their differences.

Granite Countertops

Granite is a natural stone, sourced out of the earth, cut into slabs and then polished. It has been the traditional choice for many years and is most likely more familiar to you. Granite being 100% natural is as a result porous, which means it contains tiny pours throughout the surface. These pours allow air and even some liquids to seep through given enough time on the surface. Granite sealing avoids stains. Even for granites that are more dense and thus less porous, it’s still recommended for peace of mind if anything. Granite countertops have many options to chose from and had been a defector chose among purists, traditionalists and those looking for a natural look and feel to their kitchen. We use Royal Granite for many of our coutertops.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz  is a engineered man made product composed of 93% quartz and 7% resin binders. It is a non-porous material which does not require a sealer like granite does. As a result of being engineered, quartz offers a more uniform and consistent design across the slab, as compared with granite which offers a perfectly imperfect look.  Entry level quartz countertops can generally be a little expensive than granite but both are very competitive in price and in design options. The popularity of quartz based countertops have surged in the most recent years making it an option for those looking for a more contemporary  and streamlined look to their kitchen.
